TOOL hosted their own festival over the weekend in Punta Cana, Dominican Republic, and the second night did not go over so well. The band headlined two nights of the "TOOL Live in the Sand" festival, with other bands like Primus, Mastodon, Coheed and Cambria, and Eagles of Death Metal also on the bill. The first night appeared to be well-received; however, fans were not happy with the second set because of its length and the band repeating songs after promising two unique sets.
A Reddit user who was at the festival filmed fans booing the band, and even cursing and flipping the bird, near the end of their set on Saturday night (March 8). "Friday night was extremely good but Saturday night was definitely a let down in length, variety and style," one fan commented on Reddit before explaining that the whole reason why they went to the destination event was so that they could "see two different sets and be able to walk back to the [hotel] room."
"I’ve been to 8 Tool shows and have NEVER seen or heard of booing ever," another noted. "As much as i love and have supported this band (every album, on cassette first then CD, numerous shirts, misc merch from the shows) I’m super disappointed with this and i am so glad i didn’t shell out the money for what was should’ve been a once in a lifetime experience. I feel bad for all Tool fans that spent their hard earned money on this. Us Tool fans defend them like their Kings and they do this. Shame on you Tool. I really can’t believe im saying any of this."
The hate seeped into comments on Facebook, too, with one fan writing: “And they quit 30 minutes early tonight. If you hated Tool fans, this is what you would do. It’s perplexing that they are this disconnected from reality. I think it’s more than f**ked up; I think it’s a breach of contract and they owe us a refund for tonight. Unacceptable. At least Primus kicked a**, and the other bands were great. Tool is my favorite band, and I’m just beside myself that they would do this after all that hype.”
"What happened to the 2+ hour sets? With Tool being in my top 5 bands and with Rush my number 1 I can’t even come close to understanding why Tool can’t do a 2-2.5hr show like Rush would do. They have the catalog. Why are they unable to do 2 hour completely different sets for 2 nights? What a joke!!" wrote another.
