A 21-year-old woman from Miami named Belen Aldecosea was coming home from Baltimore back in November, and wanted to fly with her emotional-support DWARF HAMSTER. Just ignore how dumb that is for a second.
She says she talked to someone beforehand who said it wouldn't be a problem. But when she got to the airport, they wouldn't let her bring it on the plane. So a Spirit employee allegedly told her to either let it go outside, or FLUSH it. And the horrifying part is she actually DID.
She says she tried to rent a car instead of flying, but she was too young. Apparently she was 20 when it happened. And a lot of companies won't rent to anyone under 25.
It was freezing out, and the hamster never would have survived if she set it free. So she decided that flushing it was the more humane thing to do. (???)
Obviously animal rights people disagree. PETA says she should be charged with animal cruelty, and so should Spirit if someone really did tell her to do it. Spirit is denying it though, and says no one who works for them told her to flush her hamster.
Belen says she might sue. There's also a chance she made it up to go viral. At least that's what we're hoping.
